What Is The Honda CR-V Brake System Problem?

In 2018 Honda implemented the “Honda Sensing Driver Assist Safety Technology” in cars to equip drivers with enhanced caution. Honda designed this technology with automatic emergency brakes to stop the cars when they come close to accidents.

The well-respected idea did not hash out the way engineers thought it would. In fact, those who own Hondas with the safety measures have filed lawsuits against the company due to system malfunctions which led to accidents in these three models: 2017-2018 Honda CR-V EX, 2017-2018 Honda CR-V EX-L, and 2017-2018 Honda CR-V Touring.

According to the lawsuit, the brake system operates on its own terms putting drivers in danger. The testimonies detail random activation of the automatic brakes, otherwise known as the collision mitigation braking system.

Now, the CMBS works to combat accidents and poor driving. However, reports state the random activation of this tool occurs when nothing appears in the way. Several owners of CR-Vs say their cars braked in the middle of the road or in the middle of the highway.

The exact reason behind the random braking has not been found, but several thousand CR-V owners stated their cars stopped in the middle of traffic or randomly on a highway.

Originally, Honda agreed to install the automatic braking system in 95% of cars, although the brake systems haven’t been recalled, the accusations continue coming through.

Common Brake Problems

You may not be able to control automatic brake issues, but there are factors you can pay attention and precautions you can take when it comes to navigating regular brake systems.

For cars without automatic brake problems and those with them, they can run into common issues such as leaks, brake light issues, defects, or electrical issues.

One of the most important brake problems to note on the CR-Vs is faulty brake lights. On a car without automatic brakes, the lights light up in the rear of the car to indicate you are slowing down or stopping. This alerts the traffic behind you and prevents accidents.

On cars with automatic brakes, the same thing should happen, the lights illuminate to tell traffic you are stopping. However, when these lights malfunction, the car might begin to stop or slow down, but the lights don’t turn on which can cause accidents.

Brake fluid oils the system that causes cars to slow down and come to a stop. When this important liquid leaks, the brakes might not work as effectively. Your car could take longer to slow down causing you to run a red light or to rear-end traffic in front of you. Usually when brake fluid leaks, your warning light pops up.

Brake system warning lights appear on the dashboard as a red exclamation point when your parking brake is still on or when you need to replace your brakes.

Any random noises or blinking lights can indicate a problem with your brakes. If you experience these noises or lights, take your car to a mechanic for a brake tune-up or brake replacement.

How to Get a Brake Replacement

If you are experiencing any of the above issues, you should head to a mechanic to check out your car. Not only are brakes one of the most important parts of a car, but not tending to brake issues can serve as a gateway to other large issues.

So if you feel like your car has succumbed to brake issues, the first step is to have a mechanic examine the issue. Take your car into the shop, explain the issue, and see what the professional has to say.

The mechanic takes a look at the brake fluid, pressing down on the pedal to see if the brakes are working properly. Manual brakes are easier to inspect because more cars have them right now. However, with automatic brakes generating popularity, it shouldn’t be long for body shops to carry automatic brake parts.

Unfortunately, if you have an issue with your electronic brakes, the body shop probably won’t have the piece you need, but it can be ordered.

Brake Reset for Electronic Brakes

The electronic brake system on the Honda CR-V comes in handy sometimes, but when the system malfunctions, you can find yourself in a dangerous situations.

To reset the system, the Honda info center recommends bringing the car to a complete stop, and placing the gear shift in neutral. Turn the car off and push down the parking brake.

Doing these movements cut the miscommunication between the electric brake and the motor, thus restoring the original functions of the electric brakes.
